Tuesday @ the Tap – 20/07/10

Yet more musical doodles: Missed last weeks Tuesday at the Tap due to being over at Ye Old Black Boy’s one off open mic…

…this weeks headliner was Irish born David Elf (songwriter/guitarist with Hull band Thirty Gees) who showcased some great guitar skills (putting me in mind of Lindsay Buckingham and the likes of John Renbourn and Bert Jansch) and a great voice that gave the songs a more American edge, like the gentler, more acoustic led music of bands like Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilot, yet always with his own unique perspective in the lyrics.

A big old crowd tonight too, David drawing in some of “the Cottingham crowd” it seems…

Neil even joining in for a Jam on a rendition of Message in a Bottle (that might owe more to Machinehead than The Police, but I could be wrong).

After Davids great set, the night opened up to the audience… first up being Trev Tighe, a Tap stalwart, giving us a taste of his new slide style…

Following Trev, came Rosie and Rob, playing songs that they’d not actually practiced or played together on stage before, but sounding great none the less…

Rosie and Rob were followed by another Tap regular Val Marshall, with her sidemen for the evening, John Cox and Dave Holley… http://www.myspace.com/valeriemarshall

A last minute announcement was Hornsea’s Abbie Lammas… http://www.myspace.com/abbielammas whose great voice I’d first heard over at Jazz Bar suday afternoon jam sometime ago… a great voice, always sounding on the edge of tears… reminding me a little of another local Katy Furze (Fudgey) with all that chained heartbreak pressing just behind their voices. – great short set.

The night was brought to a close by none other than regular Tap troubadour Richard Woolicane, with his usual brand of insightful, world-weary (occasionally overtly cynical – laughs) balladeering…

A great night with some great acts up on stage as always.

Oh and one last doodle from earlier in the evening… warming up the pen in PAVE on Princess Ave… with their in house Jazz Jam band…
